Michigan Blue Cross: Health Reform Villain or Health System Victim? In this week of insurance company bashing by politicians, my colleague Joe Cantlupe looks at the case of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, a company that made headlines recently for asking for a 56% increase in premium rates, ultimately settling for 22%—which is still crazy as all get out. But here's the story behind the story: As politicians clamored to make a villain of this company and its admittedly ridiculous premium increase request, they neglected to mention that the nonprofit BCBSM is the insurer of last resort in the state. It must insure anyone regardless of their medical histories, so why are we surprised that its costs are so high—especially in a state with record unemployment? Hospitals Will Soon Have Access to More Non-Physician Information By March 1, hospitals will have access to non-physician practitioner information after the Health Resources and Services Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, issued changes to Section 1921 of the Social Security Act that requires state licensing agencies to report non-physician and non-dentist practitioners to the National Practitioner Data Bank for any adverse licensure actions.
