Live from HIMSS: Health Info Management Leaders Push to Elevate the Healthcare CIO Amidst the excitement at this year's HIMSS conference about healthcare technology in the era of ARRA and HITECH is the nagging concern that—despite the fact that CIOs and other healthcare technology leaders have the expertise to help their organizations prepare for change—CIOs still aren't getting the recognition they deserve or the accompanying seat at the C-suite table. The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives is trying to change that. [Read More]
Live from HIMSS: Seeking a Realistic Approach to Meaningful Use If there's one concept that's come up again and again at the annual HIMSS conference in Atlanta this week, it's that compromise and balance is the key to achieving meaningful use of healthcare technology. At the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives 2010 CIO forum, participants in a town hall meeting hit on that theme repeatedly as they discussed a variety of topics, from getting physicians to embrace technology to the wisdom of telling your executive team that it must invest in technology to be eligible for stimulus funds that some fear may never materialize. Live from HIMSS: Physicians Plunging into EMRs, But Expect Lots of Help Despite years of EMR vendors, consultants, and a few early adopter advocates pushing and prodding physicians to come on board, the vast majority of office-based physicians don't have EMR technology. But if the latest survey report of physicians proves correct, droves of small physician practices will try to install EMRs very soon. Calls for adoption are common at healthcare conferences, but the message and tone feels different at this year's HIMSS conference, writes HealthLeaders Media's Rick Johnson. Perhaps that's because the federal government's carrot-and-stick incentives through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act are finally convincing physicians to act. [Read More]
HIMSS Survey: Meaningful Use is Driver of Health IT Spending Although federal guidelines are not yet set for meaningful use, nearly three-fourths of hospitals and other healthcare organizations say they will increase information technology spending in anticipation of stimulus fund reimbursement. However, security issues remain a concern for hospitals. Nearly half of the 72% of the 398 healthcare leaders who responded to this year's HIMSS survey on meaningful use spending said they expected their IT budgets to increase, adding that meeting "meaningful use" criteria is a driver of that spending. AMA leader disappointed that pay cut issue still unresolved American Medical Association President-Elect Dr. Cecil Wilson talked this week with C-SPAN about the Medicare and Medicaid budgets, the proposed 21.2% Medicare physician payment cut, and his quotes that were in a recent HealthLeaders Media article. The House approved pushing back the payment cut scheduled for March 1 by one month, but the Senate has yet to take up the issue. Instead, CMS announced this week that it is asking contractors to hold claims for 10 days, which temporarily shelves the Medicare pay cut. CMS expects that provider cash flow will not be interrupted. Mission Driven, Financially Strong Why is it that in times of economic stress, some hospitals manage through with strength to spare while others fall? While it may be tempting to say that those hospitals that thrive have the best payer mix or the most profitable service lines, often the deciding factor is the leadership's commitment to core principles of sound financial management. In this free HealthLeaders Media Breakthroughs report, four leading hospital systems—Banner Health, Southwest General Health Center, The University of Kansas Hospital, and Parkland Health & Hospital System—share the lessons they have learned to help them identify cost-cutting measures that also add value to care efficiency, make strategic investments in areas under your control, and refocus on the fundamentals of financial discipline.
