After only one year, it is too early to assess the true impact of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act. The first reimbursement payments to physicians for electronic health record adoption won't go out until 2011, after all. But early signs suggest that the program is pushing more physicians to adopt EHR systems, and that it is well on its way to accomplishing its long-term goals. [Read More] |

Senate Delays Physician Pay Cut (Again)
After struggling last week to delay the scheduled 21% Medicare physician pay cut until the end of March, the Senate voted this week to further delay it until October 1. Some members of Congress hope the added time will allow them to permanently repeal the sustainable growth rate formula that mandates these cuts. However, legislation that would do that has failed in the Senate, and politicians will probably be even more reluctant to add to the deficit when the next deadline approaches, just one month before elections. Hospitals Debate the Pros, Cons of White Coats for Doctors
The iconic physician's white coat is being debated as some question whether the coats may transmit infectious bacteria and even elevate patients' blood pressure. Some hospitals are going so far as to implement dress codes that effectively ban the white coats. A lot of physicians aren't happy about that—the coats have a long history in medicine and are an instantly recognizable symbol. Comparative Effectiveness Research is Lacking, Says Study
An analysis by researchers of comparative effectiveness (CE) studies found that only a few compared medication use with nonpharmacologic interventions, and that only a few examined safety or cost effectiveness, according to a study published this week in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Of the 104 CE studies, 43% compared two or more medications with each other, 11% compared medications with non-pharmacologic interventions, 31% compared different pharmacologic strategies, and 15% compared different medication doses, durations or frequencies of treatment, or different medication formulations.
