FORT LAUDERDALE, FL: Shalala nominated to MEDNAX board
Donna E. Shalala, president of the University of Miami and former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, has been nominated to a newly created seat on the Board of Directors of MEDNAX, Inc., a national medical group specializing in maternal-fetal, neonatal, pediatric, and anesthesia services. Shalala has served as the president of the University of Miami since 2001, where she has helped to solidify the institution's position among the nation's top research universities. From 1993 until 2001, Shalala was the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Shalala's nomination is expected to be approved at MEDNAX's annual shareholders meeting in May. [Read More]

MARRIOTTSVILLE, MD: Oddis named CEO at Bon Secours' Maryview MC
Bon Secours Health System has appointed Joseph Michael Oddis CEO for Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA, effective May 3. Oddis comes to Bon Secours most recently from Harbour Hospital in Baltimore, where he served as president. The 250-bed Harbour Hospital is a member of MedStar Health, a $3.5 billion community based healthcare system comprised of 25 integrated businesses, including eight hospitals in the Baltimore/Washington area. AUSTIN, TX: St. David's South Austin MC names new CEO
St. David's HealthCare announced that Todd E. Steward has been named CEO of St. David's South Austin Medical Center, effective April 5. Steward has more than 16 years of experience in hospital administration, healthcare consulting, and physician practice management. Steward has been the CEO of North Suburban Medical Center in Denver, CO, since October 2004. North Suburban Medical Center is part of the HealthOne system of hospitals, a joint venture partnership between the Colorado Health Foundation and HCA. Before that, he was COO of Lakeview Regional Medical Center in Covington, LA. [Read More]

BLOOMFIELD, CT: CIGNA Names New Head of Pharmacy
CIGNA has named C. Daniel Haron president of CIGNA Pharmacy Management. Eric Elliott, who previously led CIGNA's pharmacy business along with other responsibilities, is leaving the company to become the CEO of Prime Therapeutics, a pharmacy benefit management company headquartered in Eagan, MN. Haron, who is a licensed pharmacist, joined CIGNA in 2007 as vice president of operations for CIGNA Tel-Drug Home Delivery Pharmacy. [Read More]

LONG BEACH, CA: SCAN Health Plan announces executive moves
SCAN Health Plan, the fourth largest not-for-profit Medicare Advantage Plan in the United States, has hired Peter Begans to serve as senior vice president of public and government affairs, effective April 5. Begans will oversee state and federal affairs for the health plan as well as the opening of the organization's first Washington, DC, office. In addition, SCAN has promoted Eve Gelb to serve as vice president of healthcare services administration, effective April 1. Gelb previously served as director of the project management office for the health plan. [Read More]

HARTFORD, CT: Aetna Announces Executive Appointments
Jeff D. Emerson was named head of Aetna's Health Care Management organization. He is responsible for patient care support and management, promoting quality, and improving access to affordable, effective healthcare for Aetna's customers and members. Before joining Aetna, Emerson was president of the NorthEnd Group, LLC, a privately held consulting company specializing in healthcare services and information technology. In addition, Susan M. Kosman, RN, has been named to the new position of CNO, where she will provide support to the more than 3,000 nurses who help Aetna members understand their clinical condition, access appropriate care, and best use the benefits available to them to manage their overall health. AUSTIN, TX: AANP appoints new policy director
Tay Kopanos has been named director of Health Policy/State Government Affairs by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. Kopanos will oversee the state legislative and regulatory affairs program for AANP and will be based in Washington, DC. Before joining AANP, Kopanos served two terms as the chair of the Government Affairs and Public Policy Committee at the Colorado Nurses Association. [Read More]

LOUISVILLE, KY: Battafarano to retire as Kindred COO, successor named
Kindred Healthcare, Inc. has announced the retirement of Frank J. Battafarano as COO. He will be succeeded by Benjamin A. Breier, executive vice president and president of Kindred's Hospital Division. The changes will take effect when Kindred has named a new president of the Hospital Division. Breier has served in his present position since March, 2008. Battafarano has served as COO since March 2008. [Read More]
