Fallout Continues for BIDMC's Levy after 'lapses in judgment'
We had some internal discussions here at HealthLeaders Media about the kerfuffle over Beth Israel Deaconess CEO Paul Levy's unspecified but acknowledged "lapses in judgment." Some of our writers were worried that if we wrote extensively about the issue, it'd look like we were piling on. I don't think we have. We made note of the story, largely through links to Boston media, and two of our editors here, Philip Betbeze and Marianne Aiello, wrote about it in their weekly pillar columns. Levy strikes me as a pretty decent guy who's tried to be transparent and informative to the public and his employees. Transparency is a good thing. But, of course, he should expect a certain amount of derision from the public, his employees, and the media, for these "lapses," which the CEO failed to detail in his cryptic apology letter to employees last month. Hospital Compensation Costs Continue to Slow
The Bureau of Labor Statistics released new data Friday and it showed the total compensation costs for hospital employees grew 0.6% in the first quarter of 2010, and 2.1% in the last year. This slightly outpaced wage and benefits growth in the overall economy, but was significantly slower than historic trends. Hospital wages and salaries—usually about 70% of total compensation costs—increased 0.3% in the first quarter of 2010, and 1.8% over the last 12 months ending in March. "If we look at the hospital index, compensation costs have been shrinking quite a bit," says BLS Economist Elizabeth Ashack. "Look at December 2008 to December 2009, it was 2.1% and now we are at March 2009 to March 2010 it's at 1.7%. That was a contraction. You are still seeing diminishing wage growth. It is still positive but the trend is downward." [Read More]

LAKEWOOD, CA: New CEO Named for Tenet's Lakewood Regional MC
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. announced that Lakewood Regional Medical Center has appointed B. Joseph Badalian as its CEO. Badalian has served as the COO at Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton, CA, since April 2007. As CEO, Badalian will oversee strategic, operational, and clinical activities for the 172-bed tertiary care hospital located in Lakewood, CA. [Read More]
AKRON, OH: Akron General Health System names McCorkle CEO
Akron General Health System named Vincent J. McCorkle its new president/CEO, effective July 1. McCorkle is now CEO of Sisters of Providence Health System in Springfield, MA, where he has worked in that capacity since 1997. He succeeds Alan Bleyer, who led Akron General as CEO from 2003 until his retirement in 2009. Michael Rindler has served as interim CEO at Akron General since June 2009. [Read More]
KIRKLAND, WA: Malte named CEO at Evergreen Hospital MC
Robert Malte has been named CEO at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center. A committee that included the hospital board, physicians, and community members picked Malte from more than 125 people who applied for the position. He begins May 10. Malte most recently was president/CEO at Exempla Lutheran Medical Center in Wheat Ridge, CO. Before that he was senior vice president at ThedaCare and COO at Touchpoint Health Plan in Appleton, WI. He replaces Steve Brown, who left Evergreen in February to become president/CEO of the Mount Nittany Medical Center in State College, PA. [Read More]
RIVERDALE, GA: Mahan takes over as CEO at Southern Regional MC
Stephen W. Mahan took the reins as CEO for Southern Regional Medical Center last week. He succeeds Clint Matthews, who has served as Southern Regional's CEO as part of an 18-month management contract between the hospital and FTI Healthcare. That contract will soon expire, and the Southern Regional Board launched a search for Matthews' successor several months ago. Mahan most recently served as the CEO at Muskogee (OK) Regional Medical Center. [Read More]
MILWAUKEE, WI: Raymond to lead The Medical College of Wisconsin
John R. Raymond, MD, has been named president/CEO of The Medical College of Wisconsin, and will assume office as the Medical College's sixth president on July 1. Raymond is currently vice president for academic affairs and provost of the Medical University of South Carolina. Raymond succeeds T. Michael Bolger, who will retire on June 30 after serving nearly 20 years as president and CEO. Bolger will assume the title and office of president emeritus. [Read More]
CHICAGO: Orsini named CFO at Resurrection Health Care
John A. Orsini has been named executive vice president of finance/CFO for Resurrection Health Care in Chicago, effective May 18. Most recently he was corporate vice president of finance/treasury for Scripps Health in San Diego. Orsini also served 10 years in a variety of senior executive roles at Catholic Healthcare West.
