Expect to see many more of these "affiliations" as we progress further toward the implementation of health reform legislation by 2014. In this case, it's a small standalone hospital with a good payer mix that simply doesn't have the scale to implement some of the IT and quality initiatives that will be critical to long-term success under healthcare reform. Should Health Insurers Care About What's For Dinner?
Another good commentary here from my colleague Elyas Bakhtiari about whether health plans should use their influence to attack America's obesity problem. Although health insurers have long been aware of the burden of obesity and its connection to chronic diseases, until now they have had strategies for keeping certain high-risk patients out of their pool of customers. But because insurance companies can no longer exclude patients because of pre-existing conditions or other health indicators, preventing chronic disease should now be a top business priority.
