In some offices, the summer is a slow period. As the weather heats up, people take vacations, Friday dress codes get ever more casual, and the stress level goes down. Not in hospitals. Patients get sick year round and nurses don't get a respite from stress. But too often, stress reduction programs fail because they aren't relevant for bedside nurses or because bedside nurses do not receive support for such programs from leadership. Obama Calls for Permanently Fixing Physician Payment Formula
Physicians worried about the 21% cut in Medicare and TRICARE payments that started June 1 were the subject of President Obama's weekly address Saturday in which he called for "permanently reforming" the way physicians are paid. Citing the initial role of the sustained growth rate instituted a decade ago to slow Medicare costs, Obama said the cuts proposed by the SGR would not "only jeopardize our physicians' pay, but our seniors' healthcare." In-Hospital Mortality Rates Higher for the Uninsured
Patients who are uninsured or on Medicaid are more likely to die in the hospital when being treated for heart attack, stroke, or pneumonia, a new study finds. Researchers examined 154,381 discharges with one of those three diagnoses, and compared in-hospital mortality, length of stay, and cost-per-hospitalization for Medicaid and uninsured patients with the privately insured. The data revealed that, compared to privately-insured patients, uninsured patients had 52% higher odds of dying in the hospital after a heart attack and 47% higher odds of dying in the hospital after a stroke. Kaiser Study Shows Reduction in Fatal and Non-Fatal Heart Attacks with Preventive Care
In what is the biggest study of its kind, Kaiser Permanente researchers say their ability to reduce and control enrollees' cardiovascular risk factors such as cholesterol levels and blood pressure has led to a decrease in the worst kind of heart attack—called an ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction or STEMI—among Northern California enrollees over a 10-year period.
