How are vacant nurse manager positions filled at your hospital? Too often, nurses are promoted to managers because they are excellent clinicians, critical thinkers, and communicators. In their new role, they suddenly have to deal with finance and budgeting, patient safety concerns, quality improvement projects, recalcitrant staff, and many other tough topics. And they are expected to achieve a blend of clinical and business management with little to no training. Mary Ann Holt, partner, operations improvement at IMA Consulting, says organizations must set expectations for new nurse managers so they understand their role and that it is vital to invest in training, coaching, and mentoring for new managers. 'Doc Fix' Vote Contains Unwelcome News for Hospitals
After weeks of debate, the Senate finally agreed in a unanimous voice vote Friday to postpone a 21% decrease in Medicare and TRICARE physician reimbursements through a six-month period ending Nov. 30. But the vote comes with an unpleasant tradeoff for hospitals. Like the House bill, the Senate measure calls for reducing hospital payments by preventing hospitals from submitting separate claims for inpatient and outpatient therapeutic care provided within 72 hours of an admission.
