Despite Recent Layoffs, Hospitals May Be Poised for Hiring

The second quarter of 2010 was not kind to hospitals. April posted a record 18 mass layoffs of 50 employees or more in the hospital sector. And as I reported earlier this month, hospitals reported 2,200 payroll reductions in June, which followed 2,400 reductions in May.

Longer Waits For Emergency Care Coming, Physicians Say
A report detailing record-long waits at the nation's emergency departments comes as no surprise to emergency physicians, who say waits will lengthen as health coverage expands, emergency departments close, and hospitals fail to improve admitting processes. Angela Gardner, MD, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians, says the four-hours-and-seven-minutes average wait at the nation's EDs—detailed in Press Ganey's 2010 Emergency Department Pulse Report: Patient Perspectives on American Health Care—threatens patient safety. "Nobody can possibly call a national average of more than four hours in the emergency department something to cheer about," Gardner says. "Last year the GAO reported that even patients who need to be seen in 1 to 14 minutes are waiting an average of 37 minutes for care. Emergency physicians have become masters of improvisation and troubleshooting under extreme conditions, but the fundamental problems in our emergency departments remain unsolved." [Read More]
Sullenberger Urges Hospitals to Adopt Aviation Culture of Safety
The American Hospital Association's Leadership Summit in San Diego last week got a stern lecture from Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who advised them they should adopt the safety culture of the aviation industry. They must stop thinking of accidents "as inevitable and start thinking about them as unimaginable," he said. "We in aviation have learned a lot, and we're anxious to share it with you." Sullenberger is the man acclaimed for the Jan. 15, 2009 "Miracle on the Hudson," when a bird strike of his US Airways Flight 1549 forced him to land his plane with 155 passengers right into the Hudson River. He said that what happened that day, his quick decision to avoid crashing into land in a heavily populated area, came only after more than 30 years of aviation improvements and safety training for him and his crew. The safety improvements involved standardization and adherence to checklists which enabled him to work seamlessly with his first officer in an emergency. And it required a culture that allowed subordinates to ask questions when they perceived a lapse in protocol or judgment, without fear of recrimination. [Read More]

East Orange General Hospital, the only independent, fully accredited, acute-care hospital in Essex County, has named Franklin D. Hickey, RN, CNO, effective Aug. 2. Before joining East Orange General Hospital, Hickey was director of emergency and adult acute care services at Saint Peters University Hospital in New Brunswick. Before that, he worked at Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York, and Saint Barnabas Healthcare System in Union, NJ. [Read More]

TAMPA: Moffitt Cancer Center Names Commercial Officer at For-profit Subsidiary
Moffitt Cancer Center has appointed Cathy Kerzner as senior vice president/chief commercial officer of M2Gen?, a wholly owned for-profit subsidiary of Moffitt. Kerzner will report to James D. Utterback, CEO of M2Gen. Kerzner will be responsible for the commercial strategy for growing the business; all partnership negotiations; branding and public relations; and sales, marketing, and client expansion and retention. ASHEVILLE, NC: Mission Health System Names New CEO/President
Ronald A. Paulus, MD, has been named the new president/ CEO of Mission Health System and Mission Hospital, effective Sept. 1. Paulus, who has achieved national recognition in his role as Executive Vice President, Clinical Operations and Chief Innovation Officer at Geisinger Health System in Pennsylvania, will be the first physician to assume the top executive position at Mission and the first in N.C. to lead a community-owned, not-for-profit health system. Paulus will succeed interim CEO Carleton T. Rider, was chosen by Mission's community-based board after a national search. [Read More]

NAPERVILLE, IL: IHA Names New Lead Lobbyist
The Illinois Hospital Association has named Kimberly C. Parker vice president of federal relations. Parker will be based in IHA's office in Washington, DC, and will be responsible for lobbying the federal government on key hospital and healthcare issues, including the U.S. Congress, the executive branch and federal agencies, such as the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Before joining IHA, Parker was chief of staff for Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) of Chicago and Rep. Laura Richardson (D-CA) of the Los Angeles/Long Beach area. She directed their Washington and district offices and served as chief policy advisor on Medicare, Medicaid and the public health service.[Read More]

After 33 years as president/CEO of The Chester County Hospital and Health System, H.L. Perry Pepper announced his plans to retire effective Sept. 30. Pepper, 67 of Gladwyne, is one of the longest-tenured hospital executives in the nation and has led the organization through significant growth. During this time, the hospital developed clinical affiliations with three of the top medical centers in the country—Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Penn Medicine and the Cleveland Clinic—and significantly expanded the breadth and depth of services.[Read More]

SYLVANIA, OH: Franciscan Health System Gets New CEO
The head of Summa Health System's Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman hospitals is leaving for another job opportunity in northwestern Ohio. Jim Pope recently accepted a job as president and chief executive of Franciscan Health System, based in the Toledo suburb of Sylvania. Pope will oversee a Catholic health system that owns seven hospitals in Ohio and Texas, two social services in Ohio and more than a dozen "aging-in-place" and nursing facilities in several states. Tom DeBord, COO at Barberton and Wadsworth-Rittman hospitals, is serving as interim president for both hospitals. Pope is staying with Summa until Aug. 12 to assist DeBord during the transition.[Read More]
