In an effort to block insurers from illegally rescinding coverage, California regulators have passed rules on the process of collecting a patient's health history. For the first time, a health plan applicant would be able to indicate when he or she is unsure of or cannot remember the answer to a particular health history question. Top 10 Most Costly, Frequent Medical Errors
Avoidable medical errors added $19.5 billion to the nation's healthcare bill in 2008, a claims-based study conducted on the behalf of the Society of Actuaries shows. Most of that amount, $17 billion, was the cost of providing inpatient, outpatient, and prescription drug services to individuals affected by medical errors. The report included about $1.4 billion in costs related to increased mortality, and $1.1 billion in lost productivity due to short-term disability, but not pain and suffering because they are not measureable from medical claim databases, or malpractices costs or insurance payments. Medicare's financial stability was "substantially improved" by the passage this spring of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which will extend the solvency of the program for another 12 years to 2029, according to the 2010 Medicare Trustees Report released Thursday. [Read More]
