CNA Bias Claims Against Sutter Health: Discrimination or Desperation?

The California Nurses Association has raised troubling accusations of ethnic discrimination against Sutter Health's California Pacific Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco. The union alleges that CPMC and St. Luke's Hospital are "engaged in systematic discrimination against the hiring of Filipino registered nurses." CNA leaders, flanked by Filipino community leaders, made the accusations during an Aug. 19 press conference.

With No Harm Threshold, Nearly All Breaches Substantiated in CA
California is often a bellwether for other states in the healthcare sector. So pay attention to the alarming reports about data security breaches in the Golden State. The more we learn about breaches, the more we are learning that they occur far more often than we'd thought. California ? which signed a precedent-setting privacy law -- fields more than 220 notifications of potential breaches from licensed facilities per month, according to numbers released by the state's Department of Public Health. From January 1, 2009, when law AB 211 went into effect, through May 31, 2010, entities have reported a total of 3,766 breaches. The law calls for health providers to prevent unlawful access, use, or disclosure of patients' medical information and to report violations to DPH and the individuals affected. [Read More]
Nonprofit Hospital CEOs Get Big Bucks, Plush Perks
No doubt an excellent case can be made for why CEOs at non-profit hospitals earn high-six, and low- and even mid-seven figure salaries, and get perks such as memberships at exclusive country clubs—the kind of clubs that most of their nonprofit patients will never see in the inside of unless they work there. The Baltimore Sun reports that Baltimore-area hospital CEOs and presidents boast seven-figure salaries, club and gym memberships, and paid financial planning and tax services as part of compensation packages from their nonprofit employers. Nearly a dozen hospitals cover country club dues for top executives. Carroll Hospital, in reporting the compensation to the IRS, disclosed that it requires its CEO to be a member of the exclusive local clubs "to facilitate hospital interaction with the community" and because of the "potential for donors." At the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, top executives were given thousands of dollars to spend on health equipment, tuition and other personal expenditures. And when they retire, many hospital heads walk away with payouts that top $1 million.[Read More]

LOUISVILLE, KY: Humana CEO McCallister named chairman
Humana Inc. said CEO Michael B. McCallister has been elected chairman of the company's board of directors, effective immediately. David A. Jones Jr., managing director of Chrysalis Ventures, a Louisville, Kentucky-based venture-capital firm, resigned voluntarily as board chairman, Humana said in a statement. He will remain on the board. During Jones' tenure as chairman, which began in April 2005, the company's revenue more than doubled to $31 billion in 2009 from $13.1 billion in 2004. McCallister has served as Humana's CEOand a board member since 2000, and he will continue in his role as CEO. [Read More]

ROME, GA: Ulmer named interim CEO at Redmond Regional
Carlton Ulmer has been named interim CEO at Redmond Regional Medical Center. Brenda Waltz, former CEO, left Rome earlier this month to become CEO of Garden Park Medical Center, an HCA facility in Gulfport, MS. She had served as CEO at Redmond for the past six years. Ulmer, Redmond's COO, came to the hospital four years ago from Parkridge Medical Center in Chattanooga.[Read More]

Michael J. McBride has been named president/CEO of St. Mary's Hospital & Regional Medical Center. He will join the hospital on Sept. 20. McBride now serves as regional vice president/administrator for CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital?City Centre and CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital?Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. ATLANTA: Renown cardiovascular surgeons join Piedmont Heart Institute
Piedmont Heart Institute successfully recruited two experts in cardiovascular medicine this month -- David Dean, MD, cardiothoracic, heart transplant and ventricular assist device surgeon as well as a nationally recognized thought leader and researcher; and David Kandzari, MD, internationally renowned clinical interventional cardiologist and researcher. RICHMOND: Virginia insurance commissioner to retire
Virginia Insurance Commissioner Alfred W. Gross, a 30-year veteran of the Bureau of Insurance of the State Corporation Commission, and one of the nation's longest-serving insurance commissioners, will retire at the end of the year. Gross, 64, has been the Commissioner of Insurance for 14 years, appointed by the commission in 1996. The Bureau of Insurance oversees compliance with Virginia's insurance laws affecting more than 2,500 insurance companies, groups, and plans; and nearly 184,000 insurance agencies and agents.[Read More]

GRAFTON, WI: Aurora Health appoints COS for new med center
Aurora Health Care has appointed William Ebinger, MD, as the inaugural chief of staff for the new Aurora Medical Clinic in Grafton that opens on Nov. 1. Ebinger, an Aurora Advanced Healthcare internal medicine physician, has been practicing medicine in the Grafton since 1983 and will play a key role in the development of the medical staff at the new Aurora Medical Center in Grafton, which is nearly 90% complete.[Read More]
