Sebelius Urges IHI Attendees to Work Harder Toward Quality
We will hear a lot more discussion about quality improvement in the wake of two recent studies suggesting that the healthcare sector hasn't done much to reduce preventable errors that lead to tens of thousands of hospital deaths each year. That point was made last week when Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius admonished 6,000 healthcare executives, physicians, nurses, and other providers attending the National Forum on Quality Improvement in Healthcare to work harder to be creative about improving delivery of care. "Too many patients year in and out are hurt or killed because of adverse events that occur in the nation's hospital and other healthcare settings. And we have nearly two million Americans every year who acquire hospital-related infections, contributing to close to 100,000 deaths and as much as $33 billion in additional healthcare costs. And at the same time, almost 30% of our healthcare spending, nearly $700 billion a year, is for services that we think are really questionable about improving peoples' health. A Temp Company for Healthcare Execs
Here's an interesting piece in the Minneapolis Star-Tribune about an enterprising brother and sister team operating a temporary job placement center for semiretired healthcare executives. Mary Christensen and her brother, Damian Martin, have seen their business flourish over the last three years, with annual revenues growing from $320,000 in 2007 to projected revenues in 2011 of about $1.9 million. Christensen and Martin started Experienced Resources LLC in 2005 to recruit high-level executives—vice president or director level and above—who are in transition from full-time employment. Their talent pool of more than 600 executives offers expertise in all phases of medical management, including operations, finance, human resources, nursing and marketing. Christensen, a former human resources manager at several hospitals and clinics, told the newspaper that the demand for experienced healthcare executives has increased with the downward pressure on healthcare reimbursement by the government and insurance industry and the lingering impact of the recession, which forced layoffs at hospitals and clinics. John Beaman has been named vice president of finance at Adventist Health. Beaman will succeed Jim Brewster, who will retire late next month. Beaman will relocate to the Roseville office at the end of the year. During the month of January he will continue to support Simi Valley Hospital on a part-time basis while he orients to his new role. Currently, Beaman is the CFO at Simi Valley Hospital, a 188-bed Adventist Health hospital in Southern California.[Read More]

COLUMBUS, OH: Rutherford Named CFO at The Ohio State University Medical Center
C. Michael Rutherford has been named CFO at The Ohio State University Medical Center. He will be responsible for the fiscal management of the Medical Center's clinical operations and business enterprises. Rutherford comes to Ohio State from Summa Health System in Akron. At Summa, a health care network with more than 2,000 licensed beds, he has served for the past 10 years as system vice president/CFO. At Ohio State he also will serve as senior associate vice president of health sciences. He will start in his new position on Jan. 4. [Read More]

Susan Distefano has been named CEO of Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital, effective Jan. 1. Atrium Medical Center has named Carol J. Turner president/CEO, effective Jan. 1, following Douglas W. McNeill's retirement from Atrium at the end of the year.
