Ousted CA hospital CEO to get nearly $1M severance package
The Daily News in Palo Alto, CA is reporting that former El Camino Hospital President/CEO Ken Graham, fired "without cause" by the hospital's board of directors last week, is now entitled to nearly $1 million in severance pay, according to his contract. We don't know the specifics around Graham's dismissal, because the hospital board isn't talking. Remarkable for a hospital that claims on its Web site to "strive to provide superlative care by focusing on patients' needs, rather than on shareholders' demands." [Read More]
Hospitals shift smoking bans to smoker ban
Love it or hate it, the movement to ban workers from using tobacco products—not just at work but everywhere—is growing in this country and it is just a question of time before it is a near universal mandate. The main reason, of course, is the cost associated with smoking-related illnesses. The New York Times reports that "the new rules essentially treat cigarettes like an illegal narcotic. Applications now explicitly warn of "tobacco-free hiring," job seekers must submit to urine tests for nicotine and new employees caught smoking face termination." [Read More]

NASHVILLE, TN: HCA announces executive reorganization
HCA has announced an internal reorganization, effective immediately, designed to better align the company's structure with the future dynamics of the healthcare industry. The announcement includes the promotion of R. Milton Johnson to president of HCA; he retains his title and responsibilities as CFO. Johnson, a nearly 30-year veteran of HCA, has held numerous leadership positions within the company and was elected to HCA's board of directors in 2009. CMO Jonathan B. Perlin, MD, will expand his role to include responsibility for HCA affiliated physician practices. Perlin's new title is president of HCA's Clinical and Physician Services Group. [Read More]

CLEVELAND, OH: Rich leads Cleveland Clinic board of directors
The Cleveland Clinic's board of directors has elected billionaire businessman Robert E. Rich Jr. as its new chairman. Rich, an author and former standout college hockey goalie, succeeds A. Malachi Mixon III, who served as board chairman since 1997. Mixon, 70, suffered a stroke last April. Late last year, he stepped down as CEO of Invacare, the Elyria-based manufacturer and distributor of home and long-term care medical products. He remains that company's chairman and is now chairman emeritus at the Clinic. Rich, also 70, has been a Clinic director since 2002. [Read More]

LOS GATOS, CA: El Camino Hospital ousts CEO Graham
El Camino Hospital's handsomely-paid president and CEO Kenneth Graham is out of a job, the hospital has announced. Graham's contract will end June 30 "without cause, at the request of the hospital's Board of Directors," according to a statement released to the media. Until then, Graham will continue to fulfill his duties as the hospital's top administrator. Graham has been president and CEO of the hospital for 4½ years. The brief statement did not explain why Graham has been ousted, focusing instead on his accomplishments. Graham earns an annual base salary of $632,640, according to one media report. [Read More]

Savannah, GA: Hospitals losing two top leaders
Savannah's two hospital systems are losing top leaders next month, one to a larger opportunity and the other to pursue other unnamed opportunities. Greg Harb, COO since 2006, will leave St. Joseph's/Candler on March 31 to become executive vice president/COO at Baystate Health in Massachusetts. Darcy J. Davis has resigned as CFO at Memorial University Medical Center, effective March 1. The St. Simons Island native, 40, was named to that post in July, replacing Jeff Treasurer who left at the end of December 2009. She has been at Memorial since February 2006 as vice president of finance and associate CFO, working through the financial leadership positions. Davis, who is a CPA, considered herself "the stabilizing force" for the past four and a half years after working through three CEOs and four CFOs there.[Read More]

DENVILLE, NJ: Lapsley named VP at Saint Clare's Health System
James Lapsley has been appointed vice president of Physician Enterprise of Saint Clare's Health System. Lapsley brings over 20 years of executive leadership healthcare experience, having most recently served for the past 10 years as the CEO of Loudoun Medical Group. Lapsley served as the CEO of the Loudoun Medical Group in Leesburg, VA since the group was established in June 2000. LMG is a physician-owned multi-specialty organization that during Lapsley's tenure as CEO grew to more than 700 employees including 200 medical providers practicing in 53 clinical locations with annual revenues of $200 million. POWELL, WY: VHC gives Cardwell second shot as CEO
For the second time, the Powell Valley Healthcare Board has chosen Paul Cardwell to be its CEO. Cardwell was the successful candidate when the position was offered in late September, but he resigned in November before filling the position. Cardwell and Michael Anaya, former CEO for Colorado Plains Medical Center in Fort Morgan, CO, were the two candidates forwarded by a selection committee for consideration by the full Powell Valley Healthcare board. They were two of four candidates referred by HealthTech (formerly Brim Healthcare), the company that provides management services at Powell Valley Healthcare. [Read More]

ORLANDO, FL: South Lake Hospital CEO to retire
South Lake Hospital CEO Leslie Longacre is retiring, effective Dec. 31. The South Lake Hospital board of directors has begun succession planning to select her replacement for the 104-bed Clermont hospital and begin the transition process, according to a South Lake Hospital release. The process is expected to take between six to eight months. Longacre first came to South Lake Hospital to work as a registered nurse and then held several positions in administration over the years. She was appointed CEO in January 1996.[Read More]

MASON, OH: Lindner Center of HOPE names Oswald EVP
Lynn Oswald, former CEO of Fort Hamilton Hospital in Hamilton, OH, has joined the Lindner Center of HOPE. She will focus on the management of day-to-day operations at the Center. During her 25 year career at Fort Hamilton Hospital she took on positions of increasing responsibility, having started as a director of management development, with promotions to assistant vice president, vice president, vice president and CNO, and CEO in 2004. ALEXANDRIA, MN: CEO named at Douglas County Hospital
A leader has been named to replace long-time Douglas County Hospital administrator Bill Flaig. The DCH board announced that Carl P. Vaagenes has accepted the position of Douglas County Hospital CEO. Since 2001, Vaagenes has been the president/CEO of Unity Family Healthcare in Little Falls, MN. Before working in Little Falls, Vaagenes spent nine years as the CEO of Pipestone County (MN) Medical Center.[Read More]
