HIEs: Still More Questions than Answers
The Department of Health and Human Services doled out more than $240 million in grants to seven "early innovator" states with the intent of helping them implement the IT infrastructure required to support health insurance exchanges. But the agency's action also highlights lingering questions about insurance exchanges. While states are largely on their own to determine what the final product will look like when they are up and running by 2014, they still must conform with overarching principles established by the law. 'Smart' Cardiac Catheter Could Speed Arrhythmia Treatment, Improve Safety
A promising "smart" cardiac catheterization device could cut catheterization procedure time for arrhythmias in half, while dramatically improving safety and efficacy, research shows. The catheter combines diagnostics and treatment ability in one device by having tools electronically "imprinted" on a standard balloon catheter. These tools give feedback to surgeons that allow them to proceed with greater precision, and enable them to eliminate tissue damage. Researchers theorize that with the new catheter, the procedure of taking care of cardiac arrhythmias, which can take about two hours, may be reduced to an hour or less. [Read More]

Nurse leaders are looking for innovative solutions to improve these scores without adding tasks to already overworked staff. One technological innovation that may become more common is the virtual discharge assistant. A virtual discharge advocate, named Louise has proven so successful in a pilot program at Boston Medical Center that 74% of patients in the study preferred to receive information from Louise rather than from a nurse or a physician.
