Some physicians loath administrative responsibilities and seek to practice medicine unburdened by bureaucracy. But others view leadership positions as a calling to bring the experience and point-of-view of the medical practitioner into administration. Moreover, placing doctors in leadership roles appears to create a culture in which patient-centered-care is more than just a rallying cry, but is embodied in the actions of the organization's members. St. John's Mercy Medical Group in St. Louis will undergo major changes once it implements its EMR system--the group plans to remove everything except direct patient care from its 66 offices. Physician IT adoption lags
Physicians haven't shown much progress in EMR adoption in the last year, according to a study by the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute for Health Policy. Financial barriers, cited by 69 percent of respondents, continue to be the main obstacle to adoption. The results were presented at the annual meeting of the American Health Information Community and prompted members to call for stronger government incentives for IT implementation. [Read More]
