So much for Democrats' promises to clean up Congress's penchant for providing anonymous earmarks to representatives' pet projects. In the latest children's health bill to come out of the House, the New York Times found that about 40 hospitals will get a bigger slice of Medicare funding thanks to cryptic language that reclassifies some hospitals into big city, high cost-of-living areas. Texas Health Resources planning hospital in suburban Dallas
In an increasingly common practice, Texas Health Resources plans to build a new 130-bed hospital in suburban Dallas that will be a joint venture with physicians. A quantitative survey on TheStreet.com predicts an increasingly difficult near- and medium-term prognosis for health insurers as they are squeezed by growth in medical costs (a.k.a. claims) and by their over-reliance on a Medicare Advantage book of business.
