Web site may change how patients pick physicians
The creators of Carol.com, an online medical marketplace that debuted this month, want to do for healthcare what Travelocity did for airline tickets, according to this Washington Post article. Their Web site allows users to enter a procedure, an examination for a sprained ankle for example, and provides price comparisons and detailed profiles of physicians in the area. Whether providers and consumers buy in to this model remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: The business of medicine is getting more competitive, and this trend will likely continue as reimbursement cuts and rising costs put a financial squeeze on practices. Coalition offers doctors bonuses for creating medical homes
Bridges to Excellence, a coalition including large employers such as General Electric and Verizon Communications, is launching an initiative to pay physicians for creating medical homes--an approach that focuses on patient-centered, coordinated primary care. Under the pay-for-performance program, physicians can receive $125 annual bonuses for each patient covered by a participating employer and up to a maximum of $100,000 per year--significantly more than the 2-6 percent in bonuses physicians receive in typical pay-for-performance models. Internet helps doctor get back to basics
Want to get back to that old-fashioned family doctor style of practicing medicine? Going high-tech may be the answer. This Reuters article profiles Dr. Howard Stark, who moved most of his practice online two years ago. He answers e-mails in between patient visits, and although he doesn't charge for online consultations, it's allowed him to cut costs by eliminating office staff--he has no receptionist to answer the telephone and his waiting room is typically very quiet. It may not be for every physician, but for Stark it's a perfect mix of old and new practice styles. [Read More]
Are doctors too quick to blame obesity?
Physicians may let preconceptions about obese patients cloud their judgment or affect their demeanor, according to this Washington Post article. In many cases, it may be that physicians are concerned with the national obesity problem and opt for a "tough love" approach--which may not always be the best choice, particularly if patient satisfaction is a concern. But researchers have also found that physicians view obese patients negatively and that obese women are less likely to obtain cancer screenings, even though they have a higher risk for breast and cervical cancer.
