Senate bans AMA from Medicare talks
Physicians have successfully dodged proposed Medicare payment cuts for several years, thanks in part to intense lobbying that led Congress to freeze, rather than reduce, payments. But physicians may not be as lucky with the 10 percent fee reduction scheduled to go into effect on July 1 now that the Senate Finance Committee has banned one of their strongest advocates, the American Medical Association, from discussions. The AMA apparently lost the committee's trust when it broke a confidentiality agreement last year and informed state affiliates about Medicare talks. [Read More]
Concierge medicine spreads to other specialties
There's a new twist to the growing trend of physicians opening concierge practices: The model is spreading outside of primary care to specialties like pediatrics, OB/GYN, and even cardiology. This Naples Daily News article profiles the trend in Florida and highlights a cardiologist who cut his practice down to 150 patients by "going concierge" and now sees only 5-7 patients per day. The practice model is alleviating some physicians' financial woes, but it will probably remain viable for only select providers given the rising demand for services nationwide. [Read More]
Cleveland Clinic partners with Google to store health records
Google will begin storing personal health records for 1,500 to 10,000 Cleveland Clinic patients participating in a new pilot project aimed at improving electronic information sharing between providers. Physicians, hospital butt heads over ED call coverage
Three orthopedic hand surgeons lost the privilege to treat patients at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown, PA, after refusing to take every hand case referred to the hospital's emergency room. The surgeons wanted to limit call to 10 days a month, but neither the hospital nor the physicians would budge. The physicians' privileges were revoked, and the hospital is now short staffed.
