Medical groups launch e-prescription advocate site The movement toward e-prescribing picked up a bit of steam this week. Five physician groups on Tuesday launched a Web site and campaign designed to persuade physicians to switch to e-prescribing at an event that also featured former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and Senator John Kerry, who discussed a bill that would reimburse physicians for adopting the new technology. A state-by-state ranking of e-prescribing progress was also unveiled, and Massachusetts took the top spot. [Read More]

In Pennsylvania a bar association and medical society have joined forces to mediate conflicts between patients and hospitals/doctors with the hope of resolving the problems out of court. Project leaders say the primary goal isn't to save money, but the initiative was encouraged by the state's Supreme Court because physicians were threatening to leave Pennsylvania due to high malpractice insurance rates. Bill has provision to crack down on doctor-owned hospitals The debate over physician-owned hospitals continues: The U.S. House attached a provision that would crack down on physician-owned hospitals to a bill requiring equal health insurance coverage for mental and physical illnesses. The Senate's version of the bill didn't contain the provision, and opponents plan to fight it during negotiations to come up with a final version. As the debate goes on, the hospitals are spreading. Study: Most physicians don't get enough sleep A new study reports that many physicians don't get enough sleep to function at their best and that physicians tend to use more caffeine than the general population to stay awake. This isn't exactly groundbreaking research; any physician who has been on call already knows how hard it is to get a full night's rest. Forty-three percent of physicians who responded to the survey blamed the lack of sleep on their work schedule. [Read More] |
