AMA votes in favor of medical tourism guidelines
Last night the American Medical Association for the first time adopted guiding principles on medical tourism. AMA leaders say it took this action because it's unclear whether the risks of medical tourism outweigh the benefits. While the nine principles are largely meant to educate patients, employers, and insurers, adoption of them can influence the association's advocacy efforts. Rightly, the association acknowledges that the spiraling cost of healthcare in the U.S. is the driver of the medical travel trend in America. In HealthLeaders magazine this month, Editor-in-Chief Jim Molpus makes an attempt to seperate medical travel fact from fiction. What health consumers want
A new research brief from The McKinsey Quarterly says that healthcare consumers in the U.S. are confused, concerned, and uncertain about health insurance and financing needs. While this report has a Western point of view, one nugget of information applies to those involved in global healthcare: "[R]espondents are more concerned about the financial repercussions of injury or illness than about the injury or illness itself." Seeking to trim waists, Japan measures millions
So much for my idea of opening a big-and-tall shop in Tokyo. Japan now requires companies and local government to measure the waistlines of people between 40 and 74 and put strict limits of 33.5 inches for men and 35.4 inches for women. But here's the rub, Japan doesn't have an obesity problem; in fact, critics in the Japanese medical community say the government guidelines will encourage overmedication and raise health costs.
