Two different takes
News broke this week about an Australian study that examined the reasons for increases in MRSA cases. The study found two causes of MRSA: hospital understaffing and overcrowding. What was most interesting to me were the headlines used for this story in different countries. Here in America, the headlines focused on understaffing, while headlines from Canada and the United Kingdom named overcrowding as the main cause.
Women better off at top performing hospitals
Earlier this week HealthGrades released a report on maternity and cardiovascular care for women, and the quality of care that female patients receive at America's hospitals. Overall, HealthGrades says mortality rates for women treated for cardiovascular disease plummeted 15% in the last year, and not surprisingly, women who give birth at a top performing hospital have a much lower risk of complications. NY bill reveals names of probed doctors
New York Gov. David Patterson announced a bill this week that will make public the names of physicians who are charged with misconduct by the state health department. The bill also expands infection control training for physicians, physician assistants, and medical students. [ Read More]
A watchdog worth keeping
The Philadelphia Inquirer this week urged lawmakers to take action to save the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council, known as PHC4, a watchdog agency whose research has kept patients informed about the safety of hospitals in the state. While the agency appears to have general assembly support, the state's insurance lobby has suggested the agency has failed in its mission and should be discontinued. [ Read More]
