Obama adds health IT to $1 trillion economic stimulus package
President-elect Barack Obama says modernizing U.S. hospitals will be part of his effort to finance an upgrade of the broadband infrastructure of the U.S., which he says has fallen to 15th in the world. "We will make sure that every doctor's office and hospital in this country is using cutting edge technology and electronic medical records so that we can cut red tape, prevent medical mistakes, and help save billions of dollars each year," Obama said in his December 6 radio address. DoD launches personal health record with Microsoft, Google
The U.S. government is really showing its support of personal health records these days. Less than a month ago CMS announced a pilot program that will allow Medicare patients to make their medical records available online. Now, the Department of Defense will allow soldiers, veterans, and their families to manage their personal health records online. Patients at the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, can now use applications developed by Google and Microsoft to control their own medical information. [Read More]

HCA cuts corporate IT department staff
HCA, Inc., citing the poor economy, says it will lay off about 90 information technology workers at its Nashville-based corporate headquarters. The IT department is HCA's largest corporate department, accounting for about half of the 2,600 workers. Some employees were given the option of part-time work or of volunteering for a severance package. [Read More]

GE to cut jobs in imaging unit due to falling sales
The economy is taking its toll on the imaging sector. Executives at the GE Healthcare Global Diagnostic Imaging said they plan to reduce costs and cut jobs. The company says sales of big-ticket imaging equipment are expected to be down "in the mid-single digits" percentage points in the United States in 2009, compared to last year. GE declined to say how many jobs will be lost, but a representative said that there is "no question that, given this market, we're going to get much tighter on costs." [Read More]
