Under fire
Atlanta's Grady Memorial Hospital, which is still millions of dollars in debt, received harsh criticism from healthcare activists for a proposal that would generate $2.5 million per year for the hospital by eliminating free care to some patients. Currently, Fulton and DeKalb patients who earn less than $26,000 a year—or 250% or less of the federal poverty guidelines—can receive free medical care. Under the proposal, those patients who earn between 126% and 200% of the federal poverty guidelines would only receive a 60% discount on their bill. Grady CEO Michael Young said the hospital wants "to make sure that people who can afford to pay something will pay something." [Read
