Doctors often take the decider role, to patients' detrimentA fairly short but interesting piece here about the process of making medical decisions—specifically, how physicians supposedly dominate that process without getting meaningful input from patients. The result, according to the story, is that "too many people get care they don't want or need and miss out on options that make more sense for them." I'm sure that happens in many instances—but I'm also leery of painting with quite that broad of a brush, so to speak. Nevertheless, the study referenced in the article has value if only because it underscores the importance of a seemingly simple component of the physician-patient relationship: actually talking to one another.
