Stakeholders submit comments on draft definition of 'meaningful use' Here's a quick summary of some of the stakeholder comments submitted on the Health IT Policy Committee's proposed definition of "meaningful use" of electronic health records to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT. The common thread among many of the comments was that the proposed sequencing for adoption of EHR systems was too aggressive and unrealistic for many providers. HIPAA 5010 Requires IT to Do More with Fewer Resources It would be an understatement to say that hospitals have long IT project lists. They have to convert to an EHR (if they haven't already), prove meaningful use, and qualify for incentive payments under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. They also need to transition to HIPAA 5010 and be ready to submit claims electronically using the upgraded HIPAA standards by January 1, 2012—nearly one year prior to the October 1, 2013 ICD-10 deadline. Health IT coordinator to harmonize EHR standards in NHIN The National Health Information Network, a patient data exchange system developed under the Bush administration that is currently being used by the Veterans Administration and Social Security Administration, will likely be the health information exchange system used to share patient data and meet the meaningful use criteria.
