Health IT group approves standards and quality measures
The HIT Standards Committee approved 27 quality measures and 12 standards capabilities that healthcare providers must put in place in 2011. Feds Find Docs Are Using Ultrasounds Too Often, Possibly Fraudulently
A recent U.S. Office of Inspector General report found that physicians in 20 counties across the United States may be ordering ultrasounds more often than necessary for Medicare beneficiaries. The OIG identified five characteristics of possible ultrasound fraud in counties with higher-use rates. For example, in some cases there was no prior service claim from the physician who ordered the scan, which raises concerns that he may never have seen the patient. The report found that average per-beneficiary spending on ultrasound in high-use counties was more than three times that for beneficiaries in the rest of the country. [Read More]
Industry not prepared to meet the security challenges
The HITECH Act offers a massive opportunity for providers to maximize the value of data and the promise of new automation. But the industry may not be equipped to capitalize on new automation, according to a Deloitte survey, "The Time is Now: 2009 Global Life Sciences & Health Care Security Study."
