Tom Peters' 14 Steps to Prevent the Awful Hospital Experience
"Management guru-visionary-grump" Tom Peters told the assembled leaders of the American Hospital Association's annual Leadership Forum last week that they have no more excuses for poor performance, writes HealthLeaders Media Editor-in-Chief Jim Molpus. Peters spoke of spending more than five hours recently waiting in an emergency room while his wife suffered from a broken ankle. While referring to the facility only as "a top hospital you will just have to figure out on your own," he recalled the four-minute interactions with a variety of physicians, and the terse, unsympathetic "no" he got when he asked if his wife could have some water. Peters said he understands that emergency rooms must prioritize based on the acuity of patients, but that alone could not justify the poor experience. "It was not a great experience. Healthcare reform to blame for marketing shakedown?
A number of federal moves against the advertising industry, including threats to take away pharma companies' tax deductions for direct to consumer drug ads and proposed regulations that would require disclosure for blog posts and tweets, are being blamed, in part, on the push for healthcare reform. "With a new Congress and an administration seeking funding for healthcare and other programs," AdAge reports, "marketing has become an unpopular and easy target ripe for regulation and shakedown to fund the federal piggy bank." PRSA to marketers using blogs: Regulate yourself
The PRSA has weighed in on proposed FTC guidelines that would require bloggers to disclose any exchange of value that results in editorial coverage, saying that bloggers and others who use such forms of social media to market online should step up and regulate themselves. The PRSA Code of Ethics offers instructive guidance in this area, the organization writes on its own blog, PRSAY. PRSA advises its members to disclose any exchange of value intended to garner or influence editorial coverage. The key is intent, and the ethical solution is disclosing the value and its source, it says. [Read More]
New rules for press releases
The Web has changed the rules for press releases, according to this blog post. The rules for relating to the public have changed so slowly over the past ten years (since the Web has allowed people to read press releases directly) and practitioners who learned based on the old rules have been equally slow to change. Heart Center Fights to Live
Thousands of locals gathered at a pep rally in Western Connecticut one evening in summer 2008, but it wasn't in support of a nearby sports team. They were rallying in support of the Heart Center of Greater Waterbury, which the government was threatening to close. The Heart Center, which was a joint operation between Waterbury Hospital and Saint Mary's Hospital, opened in 2005 on a trial basis and was charged with meeting a certain number of procedures to attain permanent status. Connecticut Office of Health Care Access officials notified hospital executives in August 2008 that the Heart Center was scheduled to close for not meeting that quota. So hospital marketers worked with their agency to create an integrated campaign to save the center. [Read More]
