Work begins on national e-health record network
The vision of an interoperable healthcare system where providers can meaningfully exchange electronic health information won't be realized by 2014, according to this article by the Associated Press. One of biggest roadblocks is getting disparate vendor systems to agree on a set of standards in how they present information and connect with each other. Blue Cross physicians warned of data breach
Roughly 39,000 physicians and other healthcare providers have been notified that personal information, including Social Security numbers and tax IDs, may have been compromised when a laptop was stolen this past August. The computer, which belonged to an employee from Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association's national headquarters in Chicago, did not contain patient information or data from personal health records. The data breach occurred partly because the employee had violated company policy and downloaded unencrypted information onto the laptop. [Read More]
Top 10 challenges for meaningful use in hospitals
This report by CSC Healthcare Group highlights 10 barriers that hospitals must overcome to achieve meaningful use of EHRs, such as integrating decision support into CPOE, managing new types of electronic information, and sharing data with patients and other clinicians electronically. The report also advises hospitals to place clinical and operational executives in leadership roles and make the implementation a highly coordinated effort rather than as a series of separate projects.
