Three Nurses Groups Ratify Super Union
After months of negotiations, representatives from the nation's three largest nurses unions voted Monday to merge and create a 150,000-member, coast-to-coast "super union" that will be called National Nurses United. NNU will represent registered nurses that until this week had been served by the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee, United American Nurses, and the Massachusetts Nurses Association. Tampa General Dishwasher Embodies the Spirit of Christmas
For 20 years, Delwyn Collins has been the heart and soul of Tampa General Hospital in the annual Hillsborough County (FL) Foster Angel Program, which provides Christmas gifts for many of the county's more than 1,500 foster children. TGH has been the highest donor of gifts to the program every year since 1989, and a good deal of the credit goes to Collins, who donates at least 300 gifts himself each year. [Read More]
Hospital Job Growth Surge Continues in November
The nation's unemployment rate fell slightly in November to 10%, and for the third straight month hospitals continued to see solid payroll additions, with 7,000 new jobs created, according to new Bureau of Labor Statistics seasonally adjusted preliminary data. [Read More]
Almost 40,000 Qualified Nursing School Applications Turned Away
Enrollment in entry-level baccalaureate nursing programs increased 3.5% in 2009, but nearly 40,000 qualified applicants were turned away, according to preliminary data released by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Even with a decade of enrollment increases and the continued heavy demand for nurses, AACN's 29th Annual Survey of Institutions with Baccalaureate and Higher Degree Nursing Programs found that nursing schools are still hindered by a shortage of faculty, insufficient clinical education sites, and budget cuts.
