AHA: Congress Must Expand Medicaid Share Now to Avoid State Health and Hospital Cuts

The American Hospital Association is giving its campaign to extend federal Medicaid funding another strong push, saying that if Congress waits too long to provide relief, states and hospitals may be forced to further cut critical staff and curtail healthcare programs for the poor. Hospitals have become more efficient, delayed programs, and cut back staff, according to a new AHA survey in March and April, 2010. But they are still struggling. They also can't absorb the costs of care if state Medicaid programs cut back further.

Primary Care Docs See Slight Pay Hike in 2009

U.S. Found Lagging Behind Other Nations in Health Quality, Access

While the U.S. healthcare system was shown to be the most expensive when compared with six other industrialized nations—Australia, Canada, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom—it failed to achieve better health outcomes when compared to those countries, according to a new Commonwealth Fund updated report. Overall, the U.S. stood out for not getting good value for its healthcare dollars—ranking last despite spending $7,290 per capita on healthcare in 2007 compared to the $3,837 spent per capita in the Netherlands, which ranked first.
