Congress approved legislation on Thursday night that delays the looming 21% physician cut in Medicare reimbursements that had been in effect since April 1. The legislation extends the new period through May 31. The House voted 289 to 112 to enact the bill that included the provision to postpone, at least temporarily, a reduction in physician payments mandated by the sustainable growth rate formula.

Proposed HIPAA Privacy Rule regulations could be published in the Federal Register within the next 120 days after the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) sent for review this week regulations per HITECH requirements to the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA), according to privacy and security experts.

Even as healthcare providers and the federal government shell out billions to install health information technology systems, such as electronic medical records, many Americans have no idea what they are or how such computerization can benefit their care, according to a survey by Lake Research Partners for the California Healthcare Foundation. The survey asked 56 questions to a representative sample of 1,849 adults across the country between Dec. 18 and Jan. 15.

Trustees at Harlingen, TX-based Valley Baptist Health System and Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, TX, have signed a memorandum of understanding to create a new nonprofit health system for the Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas. The deal is expected to be finalized by summer, the healthcare providers said in a joint statement.
