Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius on Tuesday announced that three more health insurers—Kaiser Permanente, Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, and Humana—would be added to the list of those companies that will immediately continue health insurance coverage for young adults under the age 26. Two other plans—UnitedHealthCare and WellPoint—said this week that they would also provide the coverage earlier.

Women undergoing heart surgery and interventions are at a much greater risk of dying than are men undergoing the same procedures in the same hospitals, according to HealthGrades Seventh Annual Women's Health in American Hospitals. Women had a higher risk of mortality in three cardiovascular procedures: valve-replacement surgery (52.8% higher), coronary bypass surgery (36.6%), and coronary interventional procedures (19.5%).

In-house physician recruiters need 180 days to fill positions for internal medicine or family practice physicians, according to the Medical Group Management Association's new In-House Recruitment Benchmarking Survey: 2010 Report Based on 2008 Data. In addition, most specialties reported a drop in the cost and resources associated with filling these positions, which MGMA attributes to the economic downturn and a 30% increase in the use of Internet job boards as a primary recruiting tool.

The Joint Commission will be releasing new standards for hospitals surrounding language, culture, and communication in the January 2011 hospital manual. The standards, announced in the January 2010 Perspectives on The Joint Commission, will be accompanied by a Web-based, downloadable guide, which will be released in late May.

In a recently released transmittal, CMS has addressed an issue that has been a thorn in the side for providers since the RAC demonstration project. Transmittal 659 addresses the issue of reporting of recoupment for overpayment on the remittance advice. A remittance advice is a notice of payments and adjustments sent to providers, billers, and suppliers.

The Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization representing major private and public purchasers of healthcare benefits, has selected Quantros, a healthcare software and services provider of data management and decision support analytics, to service and administer its online Leapfrog Hospital Survey. The survey annually collects safety, quality, and efficiency data from more than 1,200 hospitals nationwide and publicly reports results online.
