Health industry analyst Nathan Kaufman is surprised by those who are applauding health reform. "Most of the people with boots on the ground believe that—as is the case in Massachusetts—healthcare reform as passed will be a disaster for hospitals and physicians," says Kaufman, a well-known San Diego health consultant. "This will really, really hurt most hospitals." Fear and loathing over what the package will do to acute care providers characterized much of the reaction he was hearing in Chicago, where he was attending the annual American College of Healthcare Executives conference.

Health reform could help the insurance industry more than any specific aspect in healthcare by drawing in tens of millions of new customers and billions of dollars of more revenue. For many insurers, they are definitely keen on the idea of an individual mandate, which, estimates suggest, will bring 32 million to insurance.

The health reform legislation passed in the House Sunday contains numerous provisions related to long-term care. One of these provisions is the Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act. The CLASS Act will make long-term care insurance available to all Americans, who will be automatically enrolled with the choice to opt out.

While the ink was drying on the historic healthcare reform bill signed into law by President Obama on Tuesday, the latest—and possibly the last—major debate on reform was gearing up across town on the Senate floor. Under discussion was the 153-page reconciliation bill (HR 4872) approved by the House Sunday night that contains "fixes" to provisions contained in the bill passed by the House on Sunday.

Attorneys general in 13 states didn't wait long before they filed a joint lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the new health reform laws. Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum called health reform's individual mandate "a living tax."

There were 11 mass layoffs impacting 50 or more jobs at the nation’s nongovernmental hospitals in February, the Bureau of Labor Statistics announced. February’s mass layoffs, coupled with the 13 mass layoffs at hospitals in January, are on a pace with the first two months of 2009, a year that ended with a record 152 mass layoffs affecting more than 13,000 hospital jobs.
