Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan will move 3,000 workers from Southfield to the General Motors Co. Renaissance Center starting in mid-2011 and aims to complete the relocation by Memorial Day 2012. The move was officially announced this morning by Blue Cross officials at the company's East Lafayette complex just a few blocks away from the RenCen, which had its two smaller towers emblazoned with Blue Cross insignia in honor of the move. "At a time when healthcare costs are straining the resources of our customers, Blue Cross looked for ways to cut costs itself," said Blue Cross CEO/President Daniel Loepp at Thursday's press conference. The relocation saves Blue Cross $30 million in long-term real estate costs, Leopp said, and creates a single campus for its southeast Michigan workforce. "It wil also significantly improve our operational flexibility , which is necessary as we continue to respond to national health care reform," Loepp said.
