Wages for many workers at Johns Hopkins Hospital are on par with other Baltimore-area hospitals, but lag behind the world-class institute's national peers. Hopkins is in the middle of a contract dispute for about 2,000 service, technical and maintenance workers represented by 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. The sticking point in negotiations, which began March 4, is the union's demand for $15 hourly pay for workers who have been with the hospital for at least 15 years and $14 hourly pay for all workers by 2018. New analysis of wages at other hospitals by the union has added fuel to its fire.
