The number of ambulatory surgical centers is now closing in on the number of hospitals nationwide, according to Tony German, the newly appointed executive director of the Texas Ambulatory Surgery Center Society. A recent count put the number of surgery centers nationwide at 5,260, including about 440 in Texas, German said. That compares to 5,724 hospitals nationwide, according to the American Hospital Association.
