Cleveland Clinic CEO Toby Cosgrove elected to IOM

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) elected Cleveland Clinic chief executive Toby Cosgrove as one of 70 new members Monday, Oct. 21 at its annual meeting. The organization, which is an independent, nonprofit branch of the National Academy of Sciences, advises Congress on health matters as diverse as physical education and Medicare spending. The IOM has about 1,700 international members from both inside and outside the health professions. New members are elected by current members from within the organization. "Election to the IOM is considered one of the highest honors in the fields of health and medicine and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service," the IOM said in a news release.
