Geisinger Unveils 'Springboard Healthy Scranton' Population Health Initiative

January 17, 2017

City residents can access the microsite to find resources for preventive care, chronic condition management, behavioral health, and food bank information.

Geisinger Health System launched a microsite to promote Springboard Healthy Scranton, a community health initiative microsite, health system president and CEO David T. Feinberg revealed at the StartUp Health Festival in San Francisco last week.

The population health initiative will help stakeholders in Scranton, PA, collaborate on efforts such as managing chronic medical conditions, eliminating preventable cancers, and addressing the socioeconomic health of the community, according to a media release.

Geisinger chose to launch the Springboard program in Scranton because many in the community struggle with obesity, diabetes, and behavioral health issues. Community members also face economic obstacles, including low wages and food insecurity.

In addition, Pennsylvania's sixth-largest city suffers from higher-than-average rates of smoking, drinking, and drug addiction, the release states.

Scranton residents can use the microsite to find resources for managing diabetes and obesity, and for addressing behavioral health needs. The site also provides information about local food banks to help individuals gain access to healthy food.

"When it comes to the social determinants of health, we know there are many more causes impacting the health of a population than access to quality medical care," said Feinberg.

The Danville, PA-based integrated health services organization has convened a network of global, national, and local partners with the goal of "transforming healthcare at its core by focusing on preventive care, behavioral health and economic growth," the release states.

The Springboard Healthy Scranton site invites users to watch a video about the program, learn more about participation, check out the "Fresh Food Pharmacy," and learn about Geisinger's precision medicine offerings.

Geisinger's marketing effort is using the Springboard Healthy Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts to spread the word about the initiative.
