MetroHealth Revs Its Population Health Engine

Rene Letourneau, for HealthLeaders Media, April 21, 2014

Although the Enrollment Outreach RV has only been in action for a few weeks, Richmond says he can already see signs that it is meeting a need in the community. During its first two stops, the RV assisted about 30 individuals with gaining health insurance coverage, and word of mouth has spread quickly about the service MetroHealth is providing through this new community-based effort.

"Boy, have we received a lot of calls from groups wanting to know how they can get the van to their location," Richmond says.

While it's too soon to gauge the RV's impact, Richmond says it will be considered a success if more people begin to seek regular care and if MetroHealth can bend the cost curve by decreasing the number of "patients who just seek care in a dire emergency."

"Success would be that we know we are making a difference in the community by going to where people live and giving them the ability to access the healthcare they need," he adds. "We will measure success by reducing the amount of residents in Cayuga County that do not have insurance and reducing the barriers for these individuals in gaining access to care."
