The former head of the Children's Hospital emergency department, now charged with prescription fraud, can leave jail while awaiting trial but will have to spend most of his time in his home.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Hegarty released Dr. Louis Hampers, 45, on $2.5 million cash bond Monday but ordered his house arrest.
"You have got to accept the fact that living in your home is far better than living in a cell," Hegarty said.
Hampers will also be subject to monitoring by a Global Positioning System that will alert authorities if he goes within 500 feet of Children's Hospital in Aurora.
