Rutgers University is now home to some of the nation's most richly compensated doctors, including a neurosurgeon who earned more than $3 million last year, records show. Rutgers added more than three-quarters of a billion dollars and 10,000 employees to its payroll on July 1 when it acquired the bulk of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and transferred hundreds of doctors' salaries to the books. The merger – pushed by Governor Christie – created a bureaucratic behemoth and forever changed the character of the state university, which has increased its emphasis on biomedical research.
