Are medical mistakes really the third leading cause of death in the U.S.?

A study released in the BMJ this summer reported that more Americans die at the hands of negligent doctors and nurses than from car crashes and respiratory diseases. The researchers didn't do their own analysis. They didn't visit hospitals or go through patient charts and death certificates.
