Baylor Plano declines prestigious Baldrige award after patient lawsuits allege botched surgeries

Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano will not accept a prestigious national award for quality after multiple lawsuits filed by former patients allege that the hospital let a neurosurgeon repeatedly botch surgeries, sometimes while under the influence of alcohol and/or cocaine. Baylor Plano was notified in the fall of 2013 that it was selected to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award at a ceremony in April 2014 in Baltimore. Since being notified in November, the hospital has trumpeted the award in news releases and hung banners on the campus proclaiming the institution a Baldrige winner.
