The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) has announced the 30 proposals selected for its Back to Bedside initiative, which aims to develop new strategies for improving physician and patient well-being and increasing the time physicians spend with patients. The teams, which are led by residents and fellows, will receive a total of $130,000 in grants, renewable for up to two years.

The council's chief executive, Thomas J. Nasca, MD, MACP, said the original plan was to select only five grant proposals.

“We are inspired by the response from the graduate medical education community, demonstrating their passion and commitment to providing exceptional patient care,” Nasca said in a statement. “The number of submissions for Back to Bedside far exceeded our expectations and, as a result, we expanded the funding to include 25 additional projects.”

The ACGME Council of Review Committee Residents developed the initiative to tackle the issue of burnout by helping physicians find meaning in their learning environments and meaningful engagement with patients. The projects will focus on direct patient interaction, patient satisfaction, and outcome measures. The winners were selected from among 223 proposals received.

Recipients recently gathered at the ACGME offices in Chicago to commence their work and will receive their initial funding in January 2018.
