University Hospitals, one of the first in the world to use PET/MRI

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Two years ago physicians began using a PET/MRI unit at the newly opened University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. At the time, only four of the hybrid units – a blend of magnetic resonance imaging with positron emission tomography scanning that is used to help diagnose and stage cancer – existed in the world. UH received its unit from Philips Healthcare, whose North American headquarters are in Highland Heights. The cost of the machine, which is several millions of dollars, was covered by the Philips Healthcare Global Advanced Imaging Innovation Center, which is housed at UH Seidman and in UH's radiology department.
