Developer of BioArtificial Kidney expands into Oakland County, MI
HealthLeaders News Brief, November 27, 2007
Michigan-based Innovative Biotherapies has expanded its presence in Michigan by opening an office in Farmington Hills in Oakland County. Innovative Biotherapies is focusing on the bioartificial kidney. Key to its development has been the renal tubule assist device, which is filled with living renal proximal tubule cells, grown in the lab from salvaged adult stem cells taken from unusable donor kidneys. In a Phase II controlled study in the intensive care unit setting in late 2005, the RAD was shown to reduce 28-day mortality from 61 percent to 34 percent. This research is an important step in making a wearable bioartificial kidney a reality.
