Pump buys time in wait for a heart

This year, two patients at a Sacramento hospital have been provided a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) designed to keep transplant candidates alive for several months prior to surgery. The LVAD also is being used to extend the lives of end-stage heart failure patients ill-suited for transplantation.
