With an eye towards the nation’s growing physician shortage, the American Medical Association is calling for a standardized reentry process for physicians who want to return to medicine after an extended absence.

Evidence-based is definitely the buzz phrase. Tell me, o sages: How do you create evidence-based guidelines in a context where it is a virtual certainty that VERY few studies have been done. How about: Logical guidelines? Rational guidelines? Even (God forbid) Delphi process guidelines? But Evidence based???

It doesn't surprise me the AMA would suggest this impractical approach to helping out with the nation's growing physician shortage. I would be curious to know about the number of physicians re-entering the workforce every year. What percentage of the total shortage (both real and projected) would be covered by these physicians?
