http://www.healthcarefinancenews.com/news/could-us-skip-icd-10-and-leapfrog-directly-icd-11 Tom Sullivan reports, above, that Chris Chute (Chair, ICD-11 Revision Steering Group) is now talking about the possibility of shifting the projected completion of ICD-11 from 2015 to 2016. The implementation date for ICD-11 has already been shifted from 2012 to 2014 to 2015+.

"Meanwhile, as Kennedy explained, the rest of the world is already using ICD-10 and will likely transition to ICD-11 soon, while the United States is still using ICD-9." Just to clarify, ICD-11, WHO's revision of ICD-10, is still at the Alpha drafting stage; a Beta drafting platform for which stakeholder interaction and input will be invited is timelined for release this year (May 2012). If ICD Revision can meet the Beta schedule, there then follows a 2yr period for ICD-11 Field Trials. The final version for public viewing is currently timelined for 2014 with implementation from 2015+. For comparison of current schedules: DSM-5 slated for publication in May 2013 ICD-10-CM scheduled for adoption in October 2013 ICD-11 scheduled for implementation in 2015+ So unless transition to ICD-10-CM were to be significantly delayed, there would be no overlap between the US's ICD-9-CM and the WHO's ICD-11.
