Pronovost Calls for an 'SEC' for Healthcare Quality
One of the nation's top quality leaders, Peter Pronovost, MD, characterizes the proliferation of quality and patient safety rankings as "confusing," in part, because they "measure different aspects of care. And none of them are really audited, like financial reports."
This is a foolish comment. The SEC reporting mechanisms are founded on centuries of double entry book-keeping, for which there is no corollary in health care statistics. It is another "improvement" from government. The government gave us rotary dial phones with party lines. Deregulation gave us the iPhone 5.
